President Clinton did wellto designate the 1990s ‘the decade of the brain’.Once again I have found it necessary to rewritelarge sections of the text to incorporate newdevelopments and to design over fifty new andrevised illustrations. In particular, the publicationin 2001 of the first draft of the human genome andthe genomes of a number of other organismsmerited the insertion of a new chapter (chapter6). The great advances in unravelling the structures(at the atomic level) of some of the voltage-gatedchannels has also meant that chapter 11 has beencompletely redesigned. Otherwise the overall organisationof the book remains unchanged. I havetaken the opportunity to reproduce the intricatelybeautiful representations of some of the greatmolecules which lie at the root of molecularneurobiology. These are collected in a coloursection and my thanks are due to the scientistswho gave permission. Nowhere, it seems to me, isthe truth of Schelling’s dictum that ‘architecture isfrozen music’ more apparent than in these magnificentstructures.
