Erwin Sommer es un respetable empresario casado que, a raíz de una crisis personal y profesional, sucumbe a la bebida. Consciente del peligroso camino que está emprendiendo, se abandona sin embargo a los placeres de la embriaguez y el olvido. Su descenso a los infiernos del alcohol lo llevará hasta el manicomio y la cárcel.

El bebedor es la novela más autobiográfica de su autor, un retrato de los bajos fondos de la Alemania de 1940 y un espeluznante testimonio de la atroz adicción de la que el propio Hans Fallada fue víctima. La opresión social, judicial y penitenciaria de toda una época cobra vida en el sobrecogedor realismo del célebre autor alemán.

Estas páginas fueron escritas en 1944, en apenas dos semanas, durante la reclusión de Fallada en la cárcel. Con el fin de salvaguardar el manuscrito de sus captores, las escribió de forma casi ilegible, en una especie de código que sólo pudo ser descifrado después de su muerte. El bebedor vio la luz en Alemania en 1950 y ha permanecido inédito en nuestra lengua hasta hoy. Su aparición en nuestro país, simultánea a la publicación del diario En mi país desconocido, es un acontecimiento literario que pone por fin al alcance del lector en español un «libro valiente, honesto y necesario» (The Sunday Times).
