El autor de El origen de las especies exponÃa abiertamente sus opiniones sobre amigos y conocidos, y de manera muy particular sobre la religión (el cristianismo le parecÃa, por ejemplo, «una doctrina detestable»). El texto apareció censurado en su primera edición, y sólo en la década de 1950 se recuperó la versión Ãntegra, sin recortes.
