Prosthetic replacement of the missing tooth is one treatment option, but it will require ongoing restorative maintenance. Space closure is another option, but protracting the molars without retracting the anterior teeth and premolars is a challenge. Anchorage control is crucial. Clinicians at the University of Dusseldorf developed an approach that uses an implant-supported appliance called the Mesialslider. In a Clinician’s Corner article in the issue of the Journal, they report use of the appliance in 17-year-old patient who was missing both maxillary first molars. Superimposition of the3D pretreatment and posttreatment maxillary scans show the mesial movement of the second and third molars. The smiling patient on the cover is Jose Angel Pena. He was treated orthodontically by Dr Jeff Y. Shao, who practices in The Woodlands, Texas.
